Here is one of my favorites from the outing. I arrived Friday Mid day, and started scouting for points to shoot at. Went back Friday evening to get to the top of Misery Ridge Trail...(there IS a reason it is called Misery...lol....my spent old legs can tell you that)
But the next morning I was treated to an amazing moonset that came across Asterisk Pass, and down into the Christian Brothers. Still working on a shot trying to figure out how to process the Dynamic Range of the brighter moon....the sun coming up at my back, and the dark sky behind the rocks.....
One of the most WONDERFUL things I could experience is that there are about 5 geese that find it their duty to wake the ENTIRE park up at the first hint of daylight. They fly from one end to the other. Their honking echoing through the canyons and playing a game of chase that is music to the soul. No one was there but the geese and myself.
So far, this is one of my first from that amazing morning. Many more are posted in my gallery in my signature or by using my WWW link, just look in the recent work gallery.

The last one you posted at FM works so much better for me. That one is probably my favorite I've seen yet from here.... you should post it here, imo !!
About this shot, I'd crop to 4x5 to loose lots of blue on the top. I also see slight halo between cliffs and sky. Tough blend to pull off, but nice work overall.
Actually John, I did in the announcment of me going on my trip....should be in there.

I noticed the other shot too, with the foreground grasses, and much prefer it as well. This is certainly nice though, but not nearly as original. I'd crop 4x5 like John suggests. That little moon sure adds a lot.
Very nice Roman as always. Some day I will get there.
thanks...

Cool shot, Roman - definitely a place I need to visit again myself...

Gotta agree on the shot with the grass. In fact, I think of the four you posted on FM, this is my least favorite of the bunch. The grass shot is easily the standout.

Hi Roman. I'm in the minority; I prefer waning moon shot you've posted here. Although the processing needs work, it's more about cliffs and stone than the shot w/ the grass, the hallmark of Smith. I like the balance, the reflection of the cliffs in the river, and the moon is great. Crop off some of the sky and remove the processing halos and you have a winner IMO.

Roman, I can't say I am digging this image too much to be honest. I took a quick gander on your link and the one with the FG brush, I think called View from Misery, is much better IMO. In fact I like it a lot!
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I agree with and see the glow everyone is talking about. Will work on getting that fixed. After running proof prints I have seen that Nikon's D-lighting is very cool to get more DR out of a shot.....but when pushed...leaves no lattitude in PP...so can be a dbl edged sword. I think after this outing I will opt to turn it off. It gave me a false sense of security. My print proofs make for soft shadow items. Not all shots are in trouble, but lesson learned.
While I have enjoyed the shoot, I am looking at it like I have found parts of the park and compositions to shoot when there is more drama in the air. Kinda wishing I had no day job to allow me the time to be there when such drama happens.
I can only post one or two without taking over the forum...lol.
If you didnt like the shots posted...I have more in my web gallery.
Thanks EVERYONE for the great feedback....it is my goal to hone my skills and good honest and most of all decent and tactfull feedback is really appreciated.

I spent quite a few years rock climbing at Smith and although I know where you took most of your shots, I've never actually been to those spots. My first thought was that although the comps and light were nice, you needed something else to really make them click.
Peggy and I are really focusing on retirement right now (anyone want to buy the Hood River Coffee Co. and the building it's in?) and eventually I won't have a job and will be able to spend the time you talk about.
Yep.....but I will be dedicating more time than ever this year for shooting. My wife has really upgraded our gear for camping and we already have some time blocked off for the state of washington in June....so hopefully some fruitful efforts will become of that. I have a friend who lives in Redmond and they said we can spend the weekend any time...so will be revisiting Smith Rock as well.
