just a little creek
I had to get out for awhile today to see what the creeks looked like, and checked on a few wildflowers. I've always hoped to see a massive trout lily bloom here, but it's never happened. I've seen other places that just never seem to bloom either - I wonder why...

A nice set of visual elements that together make an interesting and peaceful composition.

Nice image there Bill. It would be a big plus to have all those trout lilies in bloom. I have several patches around here that never bloom too. Maybe Don can let us know why. Great job on the water.

Nice shot Bill; I like the touch of green in the top right. Lost Valley is the only place I've ever seen trout lilies in bloom. Last weekend I saw hundreds of trout leaves below Mount Magazine, but not a single bloom. Today I saw hundreds of trout leaves beside Herrod's Creek, but I only saw two dogtooth flowers, and they hadn't opened up yet.

Hi Bill and Dale,

A carpet of yellow dogtooth violets with their large yellow flowers, what a site that would be but it ain't gonna happen. The white and yellow dogtooth violets are clonal and like many bulb types, they tend to be content just to asexually reproduce and form a carpet. On occasion, you will see a flowering plant in a green carpet of dogtooth leaves but these species like other bulbous plants usually perform better if they are isolated with more root space and less competition. Oh well, at least the mottled leaves are interesting.

Best,
Don

Thanks for the comments, and help with the flowering question. I didn't think I would be so lucky as to ever finding these blooming. Maybe I should have titled this one "In My Dreams"...

Someday when you least expect it you'll get the shot you want ... maybe not with trout lillies but with some other species. Thanks for sharing.

Nice shot Bill, I have not been out the last few weeks and it is nice to see your updates. One more week of following my alma mater (Memphis) in the "Big Dance" and I will be back in the woods.

Bill just a neat little creek shot. I love the greens in the foreground.
