I need to buy a new PC. I know Vista has a poor reputation. Is anyone happily using it for Photoshop, LR, etc??

I'm using Vista with CS2, have no problems and wouldn't go back to XP. It gets far too much undeserved criticism if you ask me. However do make sure you have a lot of ram and a fast modern processor though - take the recommended spec and double or ideally quadruple it. Tristan

Hi Peter,

I use Vista Ultimate and love it! It is power hungry so make sure your chosen system can cope with this. I'd say Core 2 Duo of at least 1.6 and 2GB of RAM. I use many programs with it including Photoshop, Lightroom, Extensis, Bridge, Bibble Pro, Office packages and many more. I've had very few problems and those have now been sorted (I've run it since it's release).

I total agree with Tristian - I'd never go back to XP!

I've recently moved over to a Macbook Pro, and I'd highly recommend considering a mac. I'm always very conscious of trying not to sound like a Mac evangelist, but they really are better!

If you want to get into the Wins Vs Mac saga which will never, ever, ever, ever end then check this link out on the General Discussions forum a little while back!

For me I've used wins from day one so will stick with it as I have invested in too many software programs to consider changing! Also I really believe the gap between Wins and Mac are closing fast! IMHO of course!

One last point - Firewire is so much faster than USB - Mac users are so lucky there! Yes, some window machines do have firewire but it isn't as good, and if you have a Dell like me useless!

Hope this helps!

Hello Peter
I made my own PC early last year and included 4gb Ram, SATA drives in RAID configuration, pentium quad core chip etc. etc. I installed Vista Ultimate from the start and use CS3, Illustrator 3, Easysign and various other design and graphic programmes.
I am very impressed with Vista, and it is a little faster since SP1 came out a few days ago.
I would definately recommend it.
Best wishes
Phil

I have windows vista and overall it is ok. I could even like it if it didn't overdo the security bit. I seem to be forever authorising it to open files and programmes that used to just run on XP.
I find it a bit annoying at times, but I think that it is because I am used to XP and I don't like change much.

Sorry to be the spoiler here, but if you calibrate your screen with a colorimeter and depend on it to be properly profiled, you might want to hold off on Vista. It has had a problem we call the 'authorization bug' since it launched and as far as I know that has not been fixed with SP1. When the security authorization dialog window comes up, the OS dims the background as an effect. But that dimming messes with the color in the graphics card and does not put it back when it's done. There are work-arounds - but you should know that this is an issue.

I've used Lightroom since v1.0, PE6 and CS2 in Vista and have had no issues at all. Really happy with it.

I have no issues with Vista, and use a Spyder 2 quite happily on it, as well as LR,CS2 etc.

I agree with Steve. I have used Spyder2PRO with no problems on my laptop and on the desktop's the monitor’s themselves store the information.

Have recently moved to a high end Dell workstation, running Vists business and all kind of other software on it without ANY issues!
