I currently own the Nikon 1.7 teleconverter and have noticed quite a bit of degradation in image sharpness when I use it with 600 f/4 AFS and the 200-400 VR. Could be my technique, but reviews I have read say similar things. I am considering the Nikon TC-14E 1.4x II but was wondering what those who have used it thought. Many reviews I have read have said they notice no loss in sharpness when using this TC...i searched here, but had no luck finding previous review...was hoping those out there who do use it could give their opinions...thank you in advance....Nate

Hi Nathan,

I disagree that that 1.7x TC degrades an image IMHO! But it does performs less that adequate in low light! The 1.4x TC is flawless on the lenses that you mention!

The TC-14E is possibly the best teleconverter available. I would highly recommend it on 300 and 500mm lenses.

My TC17EII rarely comes off my 300mm f/4d ED-IF lens. I personally think for the magnification you get, it's a great performer.
But, you can't go wrong with the TC14EII. Won't even know it's on the lens. No image degradation at all.

I use my 1.7 on the 200-400 , and it performs well and image is crisp, if there is adequate light. if not, the 1.4 is fine all the time.
I also used both the 1.7 and 2.0 on my 600 mm and 500 mm and found no problem, unless the light was inadequate,

I have been using the TC 17 on the 300 VR and have found it to produce very good images. I did read Bjorn's review of it and have always made a point of shooting no wider than f8. I have the TC 14E but haven't used it on the 300VR but it's performance on other lenses has been excellent so I expect similar results on the 300. When using the TC 17 try stopping down 2 stops and see if that helps.

Thank you so much for replying...i figured it might be me, so it is nice to know others have been successful with the 1.7...I will keep working on it....i probably do use it most often in low light, so that me be part of the issue...thanks again everyone, and I would appreciate any other opinions as well...nate
