Yep, for some old historic reason nearly all camera gear is still manufactured with the old imperial 'Whitworth' engineering threading, the two sizes are 1/4 and 3/8ths.

As this is such a course thread 'pitch' I suppose it is used to prevent thread stripping from overtightening with the light alloy inserts commonly used on body base plates.

Cheers Guys

I know what you mean now so thanks Alan but I still can't get one because I can't explain it to them and there is no product code, so many thanks.

All you got to do is explain over the phone what it does.Thats all i did, and they knew what i was on about.

Hi Danny I will make you some if you let me have a screw to copy.

Phil.

Ps any good engineering supplier will have a variety of Whitworth screws as they are still commonly used by model builders of steam trains and traction engines.

Danny - just ring Bob Rigby and ask him for a 3/8th to 1/4 Whit reduction bushing - simple.

£2?? Bargain.

I needed one for my 500 and eventually tracked a second-hand one down in Grays of Westminster camera shop. I ended up paying £150 for it.

Okay, in truth I did get a rather nice Gitzo tripod free with it, not that I really needed it

I must be more careful with my money... I must be more careful with my money...
