Waterfall #4
High on my list of "Places that Must Be Seen" were the four waterfalls along the Ozark Highlands Trail in the Herrod's Creek drainage. I finally got to visit all of them last Sunday. I found a small but beautiful four-drop falls in a narrow canyon downstream of #2, but didn't have time to take its picture. I think it will make the perfect after-work trip in the next few weeks.

Beautiful spot captured beautifully. I like your choice of shutter speed; it gives the water a nice texture. The litle cascade in the foreground looks almost like an oil painting.

Nice job.

John, beautiful capture. It's a really clean waterfall image for Arkansas just the moss covered rocks the waterfall, very nice. Sounds like I need this trail on my to do list.

Thanks for bringing up that point, Gale.. it is often difficult to get a clean waterfall image without a bunch of dead limbs in the shot.

This is beautiful, I love the thickness and green color of the water in the mid foreground where it curves. Nicely done!

John I'm with everyone else on the clean image. It's so hard to get those in Ark. Also I like the s-curve the water makes through the picture.

I really like this shot John, especially the light on the moss covered boulders. The fallen tree separates the waterfall and pool nicely and the stream leads one nicely into the frame. Beautifully crafted!

This is quite nice, John. You have a very well made image here.

I've never seen this falls running so high John! I remember the first, and only photo I ever took of this one - back in 1982, the day we built the little spur trail into it. It was February, I think, and the water was much lower, in fact the water was just running enough to cover the stairstep moss ledges. I shot it with my old Nikkor 105 lens that I had used to shoot portraits of about five thousand sorority ladies with in the late 1970's - one of my all-time favorite lenses. Back then I did not have names for waterfalls so I just listed them as #1, #2, #3, and the famous #4. There was never a #5 - I switched to actual names (Straight John Falls on the other side of Herrods Creek was the next one). The Kodachrome I shot that day of this waterfall was my first photo published by National Geographic and I've always had a fondness for the spot - perhaps it will bring you good luck too!
