Does anyone have any recent info on Lesbos concerning specific sites for the Nuthatches and Cinereous Bunting. I have Richard Brooks book i go on the 24/04 and come back on the 08/05.

Cheers

Ian

The maps which are in Richards book are rather inaccurate to put it mildly, they were drawn from memory back here in the UK, just over ten years ago. Since then, flood control systems have been built, rivers widened/deepened & I believe straightened. New roads and bridges have been built. Marshland has been drained

The map you really want is the 1:70 000 “Lesbos” No. 212 map.

Re Nuthatches and Cinereous Bunting. I would start looking above and to the west of Kalloni. The best way I can direct you is : Take Richards map 1, going from Kalloni to Mitilini, just outside Kalloni on the left is a garage, just before the “East River”, turn left here, after a short distance you will see on your left some grain silos, upto now all this is on Richards map. Turn left so the silo’s are on you left, continue till you come to a tee junction, turn right.

This is the start of a single track road and along this track is a known location for both Cinereous Bunting and Rock Nuthatches. I personally know of four Rock Nuthatches sites along this track.

If you are after Krüper’s, then its map 5. Just before “Achladeri” on your left you will see a large open space in front of some woodland, there are some long white buildings. This area is used by the Greek army. In the woodland behind this open area, I found three active Krüper’s nests, I worked two.

I hope to be on Lesbos from April 15th to May the 17th, assuming I get the all clear this Friday from the doctor.

Go onto “the UK forum of NatureScapes”, you will get some idea as to what you can expect.

Good luck and a safe trip.
