Spring Waterfall
Shot this yesterday evening at Clifty Falls, the sun was setting behind me and I really liked the warm light, the spot of light and shadow on the right side of the image does bother me a bit. What are your thoughts on it, is it too distracting ?

Bernie, I like the image as it is. The light is darkening and the shadow conveys late afternoon, explaining the darker bottom and left. If I had my druthers, I would have moved the fallen log out of the way. I probably would get a hernia too!! Nice shot, BP

Nice use of the FG rocks and great DOF, Bernie. I don't mind the brighter area -- it seems to be well exposed. I might try to bring up the detail in the shadows a little bit -- that could help make the bright area stand out less.

Nice shot, Bernie. (Which of the falls is this, BTW? It's either Big or Little Clifty, isn't it?) The brighter area isn't a problem, IMO, because it doesn't really come across as a hot spot, but I do agree with Chuck; I'd be inclined to try to pull a little more detail out of the darkest shadow areas to de-emphasize the brightest areas even further. If you've got them, Tony Kuyper's Luminosity Masks would be the perfect tool for this exercise.

Good image here, Bernie. Nice water flow, nicely captured. Ideally, I'd probably prefer the bright area not to be there, but it's still a good image.

It works for me Bernie. I personally like a touch of direct light as I often find it to be a bit more dynamic than the usual cloudy-day water fall scenes that we see so often. I agree that a touch more detail pulled out of the deep shadows would be nice. Nice image!

Thanks for the comments..

Kerry, actually this is just a little waterfall that is down in the gorge below Hoffman Falls. :wavey:

Bernie, thanks. Do you access this point by simply following the main trail far enough down from Hoffman?

Kerry..

Park at the Hoffman Falls trailhead and take the trail down into the gorge, follow it down to the bottom and you can go left back up toward Hoffman Falls and this cascade or you can follow the creek into the main part of Clifty Creek and work all the cascades up to the Big Clifty Falls.

Thanks, Bernie. Next time I'm there I really have to spend some time exploring. That was my plan last spring when I was at Clifty and I was caught in an unbelievable downpour, which short-circuited the day's plans a bit.

Bernie: Contrary to your concern, I think the light and shadow on the right add drama and interest to the shot. I really like it.
