I have just upgraded to the Canon 40D and after downloading my first batch of photos I find that in Photo Elements 6 and also in Photo Elemenst 5 that it will not open thumbnails for me. Anyone have any help with this situation.

Toby, it's likely the 40D came out after Elements 6 was released, and your ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) plug-in can't read the files. As new camera models are released after an Adobe software upgrade, Adobe continually updates its ACR plug-in to allow you to open RAW files from newer cameras.

Go to www.adobe.com and find the latest ACR plug-in for Elements 6 and see if that does the trick. Or you could just install and use the DPP software Canon bundled with the camera to open the RAW files, convert them to TIFFs and then open them with Elements.

Steve is right.
The Camera RAW 4.4 upgrade will allow PSE6 to read your 40D RAW files.
With PSE 6 shut down and before you start, go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi and move that existing .8bi file somewhere safe (desktop?) and rename it so you're sure it won't gum things up. Then unzip the file you download and place that new .8bi file in the same folder as the old file you just removed. When you restart Elements, it should be able to open the 40D RAW (not sRAW) files.
After you're sure it works, then you can trash the old .8bi file.

John's directions are for a PC, Toby. If you have a Mac, there'll also be directions for that on the Adobe site.
