Foggy Winter Trees
Hey all, haven't been around much lately due to family and photography travel (Smokies trip for a week - but that's another post!). For a variety of reasons I've been working on some B/W images lately, and thought I'd throw this out for consideration....

I think I like it. Very mysterious look to this.

CJ, this is nice...good atmosphere and place to capture the conditions in. It's a bit on the chaotic side, and as such, it probably translates differently within a small webfile (something you and I seem to have in common oftentimes). I'd also encourage you to look a bit more at how you could interprit this scene. Since you're in black and white, you have a lot more wiggle room to play with in terms of tone and contrast. I'm attaching a rough alternate interpretation of your file just to give you something to think about. Granted, I realize that what you have here is probably quite close to being how you perceived the scene while actually there. The beauty of black and white to me is how much you can push the image towards what it felt like within the experience, rather than simply what it looked like...probably preaching to the choir here though.

I'm looking forward to seeing your smokies images too by the way...I spent a week at Badlands NP in early March and I'll share some of those shots when I get them processed as well. It's fun to get out and photograph some places away from home just to mix it up a bit.

Gloomy day, boring sky, I will normally spend the day doing something else. I guess I'm making a big mistake. Thanks for the inspiration to get out there on such days (many this time of year). Great image :toast:

CJ,

The more fog the better as far as I am concerned. Nice one. reminds me of the beaver pond in the CVNP days. Really good job with the merges.

Nice moody image, Christopher. Very graphic too, with the strong verticals and the b/w presentation.

Christopher, I have to agree with Mike, I guess I won't roll over & go back to bed! Very nice, I would go so far as to say spectral or spiritual. A scene like this has many possibilities, color or b/w. However I like your choice of b/w. Excellent,
Bruce

Good mood, CJ. I like the feel of the image, along with the reflections that are present.

I just took some fog images myself and will be sharing them soon.

Look forward to seeing some images from the Smokies.

Thanks for sharing

Very nice, CJ. Just goes to show that no matter what the weather, or how gloomy it is, there are always photo ops if we keep our minds (and eyes!) wide open.

I like the mood of this, CJ. Beyond the beauty of the fog, I'm drawn to the circles of open ice around the FG trees. They add a lot of visual interest for me.

Hey thanks all - wasn't sure how this would land! And for those of you commenting on getting out in "bad" or non-traditional photography weather, some of my favorite images are from those days or conditions. Go for it!

Hey Joel, thank you VERY much for your repost. It turns that your interpretation is closer to what I was going for - the image I posted somehow is more contrasty than I wanted. I had worked it up to be somewhere between your image and what I actually posted (at least in my mind), but either it changed some in the online posting (which has happened once or twice to me), or I just should have taken another look before posting. Likely the latter - I'll do a bit more working with it and then probably post it in the full ESS forum.....

Again, thanks all! You guys and gals rock.....CJ

CJ...glad I didn't offend. After I posted, I questioned if I was out of line. Thanks for the follow up.

Beautiful image CJ, I think I prefer the original image, I like the darkness in the trunks it adds a stronger contrast to the image. Great work !! :toast:

When you start with a great picture its much more forgiving, and easier to make adjustments. I like both images very much, but if I had to pick one I'd pick the original. I like the lower hanging fog feel, and the reflecting water is sharper. Just my opinion and luckily I don't have to pick one over the other, it's not a contest, and like I said, I like them both.
