My brother has a Sony HVR-V1U video camera. He would like to use either Nikon or Canon SLS lenses (with an adaptor) in telephono & in macro for more creative applications. Can anyone offer some insight on technique, equipment & viability.

I would suggest your brother check out http://www.dvinfo.net/ , there is a lot of info in their forums, including one dedicated to 35mm converters for video cameras called: Alternative Imaging Methods -
Where 35mm adapters were born. It is a friendly bunch of people.

I would also check out a website www.hv20.com. This is for those who own the Canon HV20, but they talk alot about converters (good, bad, do-it-yourself). They do have a section to discuss other brands of cameras as well.
