Beam Me Up
My recent visit to upper Antelope Canyon was definitely a bipolar experience. On one hand, there was the beautiful reflective light and light beams illuminating the canyon walls with a soothing, otherwordly glow. On the other hand was the frustrating, hurried shooting experience brought about by the busloads of people converging upon this wonderland. Of course, you know about this dark side going in so either you deal with it or don't go. I did my best to find decent comps during the frenetic noon hour when the beams briefly appeared and am reasonably happy with my results. I'm sure I could've done better if given free reign to move around and shoot at my leisure, but that's just not an option. 'Nuff said...here's a few images from my visit.

This one might have been my favorite shot of the day, but while I was waiting for my turn to shoot, the beam started losing intensity. I got in this shot shortly before it disappeared.

One last beamer shot...

Lower Antelope was definitely a more relaxing experience. Unfortunately, we visited at the wrong time of day and the light was too harsh for many of the things I wanted to shoot. Here's a couple of abstracts I attempted. Admittedly, "seeing" abstracts is not my strong suit right now. I'm trying to work on it though.

Thanks for looking!

Beautiful, Guy! I like lower Antelope the most. Dealing with the crowds at upper is almost not worth it. You got some nice beams though!

I love the color but I think the contrast and sharpness are just a tad too high. Personally, I like just a little softer feel to the canyons, at least that's what I see when I'm there. Could be the light. Of course I said 'personally', these are great as is! I think the first one is my favorite.
Good job!

These are all exceptional by my eye. I might be getting immune to the many nice Antelope Canyon shots out there, but I have to say that the fourth is the one I'd pick as the best. It's refreshing in it's composition and very easy on the eye.

I like them all, and I enjoy the range of colors and the sharpness.

Guy, yeah my one UA experience was probably the last for a while (been there, done that), but it certainly is a memorable thing regardless. Those are some unusual looking colors in the beam shots, a lot of ochre hue that i havent seen in most of the (zillions of) antelope shots. But, in a strange way it actually works for me, maybe because it makes the shots more unique! I like the last shot a lot. In the 4th shot, i love the rhs (i would crop) but find the rock on the lhs intrusive, breaking the flow. A nice collection, glad you had fun!

Considering what the place is like these days I think you did a great job. I haven't been to the lower canyon since I reopened. Have they made it a little easier to get into. I know that we had to supply our own ladders and ropes.

Guy, nice collection of images -- I like them all a lot. I'm really digging the patterns in #3 but you really did well on the others considering the traffic. Its a place I have yet to visit, but I always find the images I see from there striking.

You came away with some really strong images, Guy. Taking turns and waiting in line to photograph doesn't sound too appealing, but if you have to do it, these are a fine reward. Nice work.
