Barn Owl (c)
(c) in title for captive bred. Apologies

Taken during another session with one of the Barn Owls I work with. On this one I have dimmed the lighting down in the camera by increasing the shutter speed to create a close to darkish feel to the shot.

Does this work?

Thanks for looking :toast:

great flight shot, but a bit dark for my tastes, maybe increase the contrast to brighten up the head and front of the wings??

like the effect the shorter focal length is giving, do you get them too fly around you in a circle for this close a shot?

Hi Jack, I looked at increasing the contrast a bit but it looked odd so I kept it more or less as it was. The 105 I am using for this type of shot IMO is a pleasure & providing me with more of a challenge than the bigger lenses I use.

The Owl doesn't fly around in circles i'm afraid, she as learn't that staight lines with a bit of ducking & diving is more fun:biggrin:

Thanks for the comments :toast:

Like the idea, do you think the horizon is ok at that angle?

Good stuff

Good point Tim & if I was to be honest my answer would be no  Well spotted though! Part of the flying field is angled & the birds won't fly at the same angle. There is an alternative where I can turn the lowest point into land fill

Very effective Vince, and it works great for me :toast: :toast:

Agree with Jack, regarding the perspective given by short teles/ closer range shooting!!

looks like it would work well in a movie scene... so how close are you to the owl with this lens ? How are ya Vince?

I like it a lot, just as it is!

Looks very sharp with excellent detail - I would prefer the bird itself to be a little brighter. But I would love to see one!

I like the shot, Vincent. After all they are quite nocturnal creatures and the effect looks very natural.

Agree with Paula - the darkness effect does bring out the nocturnal nature of owls, I like it for this different take on things
