Greetings NPNers,

This coming summer, I will be launching a new conservation education project entitled Canopy in the Clouds. Funded by a Young Explorers Grant from the National Geographic Society and sponsored by New Tribe, Inc., the project will create a new generation of educational media designed to inspire young scientists and expose them to a rare and endangered ecosystem. Set in the canopy of the tropical montane cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica, Canopy in the Clouds unites three emerging professionals in science, photography, and cinematography to create a bilingual curriculum that will reach audiences in the United States, Costa Rica, and around the world.

Fieldwork to collect scientific data and media footage will begin over this summer and continue into the coming year. The project will use the perspective of the cloud forest canopy, a world unto itself, to communicate the impacts of global climate change and the cutting-edge research currently working to understand it. Outreach materials associated with the project will be released during the field season, with the final educational curriculum and media appearing in fall of 2009. All tree climbing and research is conducted in accordance with Leave No Trace Principles and necessary permits. A full project description can be found at our website, http://www.canopyintheclouds.com.

Locally, we will be working with the Monteverde Institute (MVI), a nonprofit striving to blend international study and applied research with community development in the local area. MVI will be helping us with local logistics and making connections with the local residents. As a result of all their help, we would like to present a gift to help support their mission. We have decided to try to put together a set of point and shoot digital cameras that MVI can use as teaching tools within the local community. And this is where I can use help from the community here at NPN.

I know that many of you use P&S cameras frequently and if you are like me, you probably have an older model sitting in a desk drawer or closet shelf somewhere. I am hoping a few of you would be willing to donate your older cameras that are just gathering dust to MVI to help facilitate their community building in Monteverde, Costa Rica. I ask that the camera is no more than two years old and in good working order. Instruction manuals would be nice, especially if they are in Spanish, but we can usually get those online as well. It is our hope to present a set of 12 cameras in good working order so that MVI can conduct small basic photography classes. In fact, I will probably be involved in starting the classes while I am there.

If you would be willing to contribute, please reply here or contact me by email. I thank each and every one of you for your support now and over the past 6 years as I have been learning and growing photographically.

Best,
Drew
