This may have been done before, but it would be neat to have the moderators post a new thread each month with a link to a RAW file that could be downloaded and post-processed by the forum participants. Each participant would then post his or her version of the final product as a jpeg back to the same thread and reveal the steps taken in processing. Forumers could even submit raw files they'd like to see worked over via email or other method. And, the moderators could choose photos with specific challenges such as dynamic range, etc. There are some extremely talented digital darkroom experts around here, and I'd like to learn from them. Plus, it would be exciting to see the different visions of the same photo.

This is a very intriguing idea! Seems like more often than once a month would be nice.

Good idea.
But, can the site handle downloading the raw file sizes ?
It wouldn't be any fun working on JPEGs.

Chad

That is a fantastic idea.

I would agree forum members would supply the files by emailing us a raw files. (We will have to decide on a file size, so they are easily emailed and downloaded.)

Depending on the amount of interest we could make available one file per week (or every other week), and have forum members post their processed images. In addition the members can describe and discuss any special techniques and/or tools used in post-process.

I like this idea. What does everyone think?

I think this would be fun and a great learning experience. Let's do it.

Have to agree with Paul, what a great learning experience. I am all for it.

I like it. I'm assuming the person would tell us what they did to the image to enhance it? Sounds like a great learning experience.

I agree - this would be a great learning tool. Perhaps it's worthy of it's own Forum on NPN? The appeal would certainly be wider than RMNP alone.

Yes, the digital dark room is an area which although seldom discussed can make a huge difference in the final result. And I think we can all learn from the various techniques applied.

I was actually just talking with James E. yesterday about this. He mentioned there are images he has thrown away because he did not even think about performing a blend for the under/overexposed areas.

I learned the most valuable lesson regarding blends from forum member Jesse Speer. He has a tutorial on it on his site. I can imagine a RAW file from Monument Valley or somewhere with extreme dynamic range. That would be quite a challenge! And there are *many* tools available to perform such a blend including PS manual blending.

Great idea! :toast:

Great idea, I'm all for it. There are so many different ways of accomplishing the same thing and it is nice to see what other people are doing.

Great idea. It would be fun and instructive. If there were a place to share filespace, maybe a free online storage space, we could share photoshop files with the layers and masks in place. This would be a great to review in addition to a description of the steps/process applied to a file.

Hey, I was lurking in this forum and stumbled upon this thread. If you guys end up posting full size RAW files, you can go through YouSendIt.com...they offer free image upload to their FTP server

I don’t think we are going to be uploading /downloading full size images. It would take up too much space and depending on everyone’s connection may take too much time to upload download.

Also, once we post results we are limited to uploading images that are maximum 720 pixels on the longest side.

If you have more ideas, please keep 'em coming.
