Changing of the Guard
1D2n, 600m f4 is x2 TC, 1/1000s, f8, iso 400. Substantial crop.

This is a bit untidy, but then ospreys are untidy! The nest is about 150m away. The female is 20yr old and has laid three eggs this year, 52 in her lifetime. The area is very well guarded as you might imagine. At present, one bird sits on the nest while the other hunts or finds something else to do. There is a frantic exchange every so often (1-2 hr the time I was there) that lasts for a minute or so.

Needless to say, I will be back!

My cover is blown!

Yes - you can watch the events unfold on their webcam. http://www.swt.org.uk/?gclid=CNHyopO66pICFQdtMAodmTgvxw
But watching it in person is a real privilege.

Ian,

Great image Ian, it must be great watching/photographing them.

I found a website the other day showing updates on a satellite tracked Osprey (aka Logie) on her spring migration north. Amazing birds.

Glad to see she's still back. Gave up visiting there a few years back with all the slamming doors and squalling kids . Watched a youngster nearly come to grief there once 'cause it'd got a very large fish and was spread-eagled in the water with it... it took some flapping around, but it did eventually get airborne again.

Hi Ian,

Excellent shot, showing the nest environment very well. I've got a fair trip north if I want to see these!!

Nice work

Regards

Gosh some seriously heavy branches make up that nest, how on earth do they get them up there!

Hi Ian,

Awesome capture! The 600mm + 2.0x TC combo is looking popular lately! Nice job handling it!

2x converter on at f8 and not f11? What would the techno-purists say

Looks great and I'd love to see something like this. Well captured Ian :toast:
