Hi John,

Very nice capture! I've been trying to get a clean shot of one of these for weeks now!

Very nice shot John, you have got me plotting a pool in the garden :toast: :toast:

Most of the bird looks like it is in sharp focus, just the tail is getting a bit soft. Getting sufficient depth of field with the subject large in the frame like this is a real challenge. I would be interested to learn a little more about technical aspects here; is this the full frame, and is this shot at minimum focusing distance using 300mm?

However it was shot, you succeeded in producing a very attractive image. Nice work.

Hi John,

Another very nice image in your pool series. Although it is a LBJ, they are very attractive!

Thanks all
Phil The cropped image is2857x1981 Uncropped would be 3872x1981 I,m no good at maths but is that about 70% of the original? The nearest focus point on the pool is about10 inches in front of this bird. That front edge of the pool is about 6 ft from the hide. I,ve found in recent years that its better to rack out a bit and go for the smaller image (Concerning your DOF comment ) A lot of my stuff is done at around the 200 -250mm mark
In my opinion people often try to get the biggest posible image of the bird which is understandable I suppose.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
John

Lovely john,
I like the way your subjects stand out without losing the background - best of both worlds for me.

It is indeed a nice bird, but of course it the setting here that makes this such a beautiful image overall, especially the coloured ripples.

Hi John,

Another very nice pool image. I particularly like the ripples and the complementary shades in the background

Best regards,

Austin

Nice.. I really like the bg colours, they compliment the bird but still allow it to stand out.
