Today was a dream come true when i received a tip about this Barn Owl wich hunts in the late afternoon. This is an extreme rarity as Barn Owls never hunt during the day in The Netherlands.
Funny detail is that i had a discussion with Danny Green last weekend how on earth these English guys got all these Barn Owls to hunt during the day....
Greetings,

Simply a stunning image Jeroen & one to be more than pleased with, loads of detail plus a clear shot. I like it!
In the Netherlands these Owls only hunt when dark? Not normal behaviour, if they can hunt in the day they would! Night hunting is safer for them as they know there is very little threat about. I think the above makes sense
Possible reasons for this Barn Owl to be hunting during the day
1) Long spells of heavy rain during the night & early hours
2) A large brood to feed
3) A location where there are not many conflicting species that will attempt to steal the Owls food whilst hunting in day light.
Sounds to me like this Owl as many mouths to feed.
Beautiful birds & enjoy

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your comments so far!
To Vincent: In the Netherlands the Barn Owls only hunt at night and we never see them during the day. There has been quite a bit of rain in the evenings but a lot of sunshine too. Strange thing is that i caught it twice hunting during rainstorms...
I guessed that he might have a nest somewhere, but then he should transport his caught mice and this guys just eats them all himself. The terrain is ideal (near a golf course with lots of mice in the area) but there's also Buzzards, Kestrels and Storcks around which also eat mice...
I have no idea why this guys does what he does....just know i am very happy with it!..
