New from SD
Hi, I am Lon Sharp, from Hot Springs SD and I just noticed you added SD to your banner. I have been chasing images pretty relentlessly this past year and with an upcoming early retirement the end of '08, hope to do much more. I have mostly focused on fauna and avian but would love to get to the level I see in EES and other galleries! Here is a sample of local wildlife, a grouping of backlit pronghorn in Custer State Park, which is next door to Wind Cave Nat'l Park (both very near to my home.)

D200, 70-200, 1/500, f5, ISO 125

Hi Lon, welcome to CSNP! You are our first member from South Dakota and we're glad to have you aboard. Very nice sharpness and detail in this shot. The backlight really is nice too. I've had the pleasure of seeing some pronghorn in the wild twice ... unfortunately, both times from a moving car.

Thanks for posting, I'm looking forward to seeing many more from you! :wavey:

Welcome aboard Lon. Really nice sharp image with great backlighting. I lived in Great Falls, MT for a couple years and came through Custer State Park a few times. I look forward to seeing more from you.

Welcome Lon. Nice photo. Like Wayne, all my sightings of pronghorn have been from a moving vehicle and not through a camera lens :(.

Greetings Lon, you live in one of my favorite places in the world. We've vacationed in Custer State park 3 times and I wouldn't mind making it 4. The wildlife possiblities there are wonderful. If anybody wants to photograph buffalo, pronghorn, mountain goats, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep or even donkeys close up and can't justify Yellowstone, Custer is the place to go. We've had to shoo the "wildlife" out of the car before and we weren't the only ones. The scenery is awesome (It's just south of Mt. Rushmore). Like the others I'm looking forward to many wonderful images from you. :wavey:

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Yes, I live in a fine area and the stae and national parks are a great bonus. And yes, in Custer State Park the wild burros will indeed come to your car in the summer, trained by tourists to expect handouts. Here is a newer member of the Custer burro herd, taken a few months ago. Both parks offer terrific opportunity for pronghorn, buffalo, prairie dog, mule deer. Decent population so elk are here, but they are MUCH wilder than their Yellowstone Park cousins. Big Horn sheep numbers are in trouble, but present. Whitetail are common. Coyotes, badgers and the like are not an everyday sighting, but present if fair numbers. And of course there is bird life, scenery, and lots of space without fences and highlines! I would encourage any and all of you to check out the Black Hills. If you have any questions, I would be happy to help however possible.
