I'll post a new thread because it may get missed down there and I think this is an important over looked step.

Lets take this one step further  To take a stacked shot of an insect, etc, first you have to capture one of the subjects alive, because it needs to be fresh, they make the perfect specimen, yes even a pretty butterfly, then you have to take a syringe filled with alcohol and then you have to ...........................

Now what do you think. Are you capable of getting stacked shots. Is it worth it ?.

I do a fair bit of scientific illustration for scientists that regularly partake of this particular well. Is there a difference?

Ahh ok, I post beside guy's that do this everyday as well Hank.

So in my backward Kiwi way, maybe I don't make it that clear I guess  so I'll try a black and white way.

Hank, would you take a live Swallowtail butterfly, inject it so you could take stacked shots of it for a hobby?.

Is there a difference, probably, but then I'm one that can't kill a fish and gut it either or kill anything knowingly. But thats just a me thing I guess.

All the best.

I'd gladly do it on a dead swallowtail, but I wouldn't kill it to get the shots. Would kind of kill the fun for me.

That definitely adds a different dimension to it. I certainly don't have a problem with killing some critters (roaches, flies, mosquitoes, etc.), but they're in no condition to be photographed after I do them in (smushed!). I'm a life long hunter and have no problem killing wild game to eat, but I would have a real problem killing something just in order to take a photo. Just me, of course...

Thanks folks and sorry about that, I should have thought about it more in the first thread. Something just come to mind and it was actually what Bill said in the last thread and thought I better clear that up, because I sort of know what Bill is like and didn't want the important question missed.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Like my mom used to say, "If you kill it you are going to have to eat it." ' Nuff said

If the subject was already dead I'd have no problems in photographing it! But I won't kill something just for an image!
