Dormouse (c)
This is a scan with my home made equipment off an Ektachrome slide taken in the eighties ! (Sad old man ) I have posted it for several reasons. It was, and probably still is one of my best selling animal pictures. It bought me a second hand Cortina in fact, whichI dearly miss.!
I allowed several conservation bodies to use it free of charge , partly because I was working for NCC at the time, and also they had allowed me access to land for photography. I couldn't very well ask for dosh could I ? ( some would I suppose )
However because it was used quite a lot, in a dozen countries at least legally, it has been "nicked " frequently. I go on Google images every now and then, and have a look .It usually turns up quite a lot along with my Great Crested Newt Pictures,. I did it tonight and found two sites using it with out permission. So if I contact them ,they say "sorry"- we are a conservation organisation we thought it would be OK Shall we take it off ??"
If you say yes you may loose a fairly good bit of advertising in the process, so it is not always as cut and dried as it appears .
Seeing your pictures illegally used on the net is a far cry from those in books..
Cheers

I appologise for the quality.
Nice pic. I don't want to ramble on but 99% of the time these people use their situation as an excuse to freeload. Inform them they are using your image without permission and try and find out where they nicked it from.
Regards
Rob

Hi Rob
I do just that ,and they say it came off the English Nature site or one of the WIldlife Trust sites for example so they assumme its for general conservation use. As I say I have had loads taken off but is it really worth it in the end. They won't pay anyway and they will use any old stuff if they have to.
Its a difficult one though.
Certainly won't get me a second hand anything these days- won't even fill the tank up !!
Cheers
John

I see why it would be a popular image John. With regards to letting go of the copyright I would personally challenge anyone using it without your permission.
They are giving it away at the below link. Is this with your permission.

Gorgeous shot John. I love the film look and lighting style we used back then. Yes your image looks like it belongs in a school book. If I were in 4th grade I would look at that photo all day long
yeah all this copyright stuff is bittersweet..... and google is the one behind the Orpan bill as you all know ....but there are so many search engines that just grab stuff and throw it up on their site too....all my youtube documentary videos are everywhere but my name is with it and am given credit for it....
I myself would let a few images go but there are some that I will fight for to the death.

Beautiful picture!!
Do you know about this?
http://www.dacs.org.uk/
If you have been published you can claim some money, it sort of covers the things like people nicking images, or photocopying them for their own use etc. We were told about this at Uni. I'm not sure how much you can get, but it's certainly worth a try! Looks like you don't actually have to be a member of DACs to claim, and you apply in the spring...
Hope that's of interest!!

Thanks
I' ll chase up the links
It shows also how an image can be degraded too. The wallpaper give away is absolute rubbish .

Hi John,
On looking through your great website I did notice the following notes.
1) FEEL FREE TO DOWNLOAD THE PICTURES, BUT REMEMBER THE COPYRIGHT BELONGS TO ME
It then says
USE THE PICTURES FOR YOURSELF, BUT COMMERCIAL USE
OOPS !
CLICK HERE TO CHECK THE LARGE ARCHIVE OF MONOCHROME PICTURES AVAILABLE
Might be worth amending the wording on your site as it reads to me that you asking for trouble when it comes to infringement of copyright. Just a suggestion.
I do like the site, the images & best of all the name dropping page, brilliant

Thanks all.

I hear what you are saying. That web site is older than God's dog !! (like me) I have a massive new site built but would need broadband to upload it !
The reason I didn't worry too much was that the pics were so poor that I didn't think anyone would use them at that quality for anything "worthwhile "
It would just help if they would ask now and then. I suppose over the years I have sold a fair number by people seeing the same shot on these sites so it can't be all bad.
Cheers

I like your attitude
The face on the dormouse sorta says (Copyright whats that then )
Fortunately John, my images aren't worth nicking, so I don't need to worry about all this stuff
Very endearing image and commercially popular I should imagine

A really interesting post - as for name-dropping. If you've got it flaunt it I say.
It may make you fed up having your pictures stolen, but imagine how it feels when nobody wants to steal them!
Great shot of the dormouse, if you had taken that yesterday with a digital camera, it would still sell like hot cakes - a classic. Eric

Ah, I can see why the shot did so well for you. It is lovely.
