Prints for Royalty?

I was just contacted by an art consulting agency which wants to put 700 of my prints in a hotel. They are however wanting to do it based on a royalty charge allowing them to have the prints made themselves. Is this common practice? I've looked at my pricing tools such as "FotoQuote" and there is nothing listed for such situations, but I'm assuming that it could drastically reduce the price, which I am reluctant to do. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Any advice?

I would suggest charging them what you would expect for 700 prints, minus the cost of printing them. I don't see where you need to be fancier than that. Basically your markup, minus any discount you feel appropriate for that kind of quantity. That could be a real nice score.

Now OTOH, I would be damn sure they understood that this was limited in scope, and that they were to destroy the digital negative after printing. Alternatively, you could control the transmission of your digital negative to their printer. You did not mention how many different photos were involved. If this is a chain hotel, they could be intent on taking liberties using your photos elsewhere.

I would not walk away from it, but they are snooping for a discount. Just subtract the cost of printing as a starting point. Let them counter.

Thanks Michael,

I haven't spoken with them yet as I was out of the gallery when they called. I'm going to begin negotiations this morning and will find out exactly who their client is and how many different prints are included in this 700. It sounds like they have a long list of different prints. I fear they may try to negotiate as if they are posters and I certainly don't want to do that!!!

Ok, I just received clarification on this. This is for a well known hotel in Denver. They want 3 different prints which the art consulting agency desires to print and frame these themselves. These are about 11x14 sized and so not as large as I first anticipated. To my surprise, we actually reached a settlement which I feel is reasonable. The contract will also specify very clearly how many prints can be made. Thanks for your input again Michael!
