I just got back from a weekend in the Smokies... awesome trip. I found these beautiful flowers yesterday afternoon. I won't reveal their location, because unfortunately there are idiots who will dig them up thinking they'll bloom in their garden, or maybe they just do it to be mean... who knows. A lady from the park service that I ran into said several plants and been dug up this year. Anyway I could'nt believe what a wonderful group it was, growing on top of a mossy log. I got some closer shots too, but wanted to share an image of the whole clump.
It kills me that people dig up the plants, because it is essentially a death sentence for the plants. Why not just leave them there where everyone can enjoy them.
Worse yet, is when "nature photographers" destroy a nice display of wildflowers such as this after getting their images to keep others from getting the same. I ran into this situation several times in the Smokies over the years.
Really great shot Alice, very pretty flowers. Wish I had gone along with you after we ate, instead of heading home. But I got home around 3pm, you said you didn't get home till 10pm. I had already had a nap and downloaded my images by then. lol
I can't believe how stupid and inconsiderate people can be, have seen too many stupid things first hand in cades cove when I use to live really close by.
We saw a few nuts this past weekend as well, didn't we Alice.
Yes the Sigma 105. I love the lens but actually have it for sale on Ebay... have ordered the Sigma 180 macro. I can't get enough separation of the background with the 105 in a lot of cases... this photo being one of them.

Nice find! Dominic Rosseti has one of these on CSNP. Was this with the Sigma 105?
