karaoke Practice
Between the singing lessons and all the practice, hopefully this little guy has a shot at the karaoke contest tonight!

I posted a marsh wren on the Avian Forum, taken a few days ago. I am attacking my learning curve on the new 40D and while the days old shot wasn't too bad it was more luck and experimentation. Before todays shoot I spent more time setting up the camera for optimum results. I whistled the same wren out of the grasses and up onto the cattails (at least we whistled/chattered back and forth to each other) he was very cooperative. Out of 160 shots almost all were sharp, detailed and action was frozen. I used about F/5.6 with the 600mm and if I were to change anything it would be to increase the DOF with a higher stop.
Other then that, it was a great day at the Ridgefield Refuge.
I could use help in toning down the white area at the top of the cattail. Is the image too dark? If I try and lighten it the whites will go.

Canon EOS 40D, 600mm +1.4X F/5.6 1/1300 ISO250

Thanks for you suggestions!

You've done a great job of capturing the expression of the Marsh Wren Craig. I also love the background to this shot.

Craig, nice shot. Glad he came out to play. Sat. morning I went on a 5 hour hike through Stigerwald (sp) refuge here in Washougal with one of the Wildlife Guides. The 10 of us spotted exactlly 50 bird species. No good photos with only a 200mm lens, but it was interesting.

Sing away! Love to hear the birds when hiking the marshes around here also. Nicely captured.

Wonderful capture! I don't think it's too dark, and agree that a tiny bit more DOF would be optimal, but that's a nit.

It's a great capture, Craig.. I think it could stand a *little* brightening though. If you use Photoshop CS3, have you tried using the recovery adjustment in Raw to save a little detail of the whites? And in all versions I have sometimes used the lasso tool to select the white areas in an image, set the feathering to about 40 pixels, then chose selective color - picking whites and sliding in a little black - just a little to tone it down a bit...

Hard to beat this, Craig. The background is perfect.
