I am traveling down to Orlando first week in June - by car.

Looking for good, reliable, locations for either landscape and or wildlife. Our route has not been decided - could do I95 could not.

My driving buddy is less into wildlife and more into landscapes and maybe (I know it's heresy in here) architectural shots.

I know the TN side of the Smokies - I love Cades Cove - but have never been in June. Whats the NC side like - are the Elk still alive or did they go the way of the Red Wolves?

I really have no preference - but since we are driving - I can bring all the gear - 12mm to 500mm.

I'm sure the elk are alive and well in Cataloochee. It's a good spot that you might want to visit. Some historical buildings are there as well for the (ugh!) architectural shots! (Just kidding, I've shot some of the interesting buildings there myself!) There's usually some fog in the early morning. Big Creek is one of my favorite areas for river and wildflower shots, but obviously the spring flowers won't be there in June. You may want to check out the Blue Ridge Parkway, and then Transylvania County, NC for waterfalls. From there it's easy to hit I-26 to head south and continue on your trip.

Cades Cove in June should give you opportunities for young whitetail fawns-I love Cataloochee but I wait until July/August to visit and see the elk calves.

If you end up coming down I95, I would strongly suggest taking a 5 mile detour off the highway to visit the historical town of St. Augustine, Florida, about 1 hour south of the Florida/Georgia border. St. Augustine is the oldest town in the U.S. and has a fabulous old town full of historical buildings built in the 1800's (great for architecture photography), a great fort built in the 1600's and a beautiful lighthouse built in the 1800's. It also has beautiful beaches and the St. Augustine Alligator Farm which has a bird rookery popular with many, many photographers. It;s my favorite place in Florida!

If you're going to Orlando, please do yourself a favor and go to Gatorland. Please see my post on it, which I'm going to do right now.
