like most of my pictures, this one is flawed. It was nice and overcast when I set this one up and the sun came out and came through the trees overhead. The big white spot is blown out but I thought the rest of it was interesting.

Canon 40D 100mm macro
f29 1/6 sec ISO 100

Hey Mike, you could have used one of the umbrellas we've been talking about to shade this one since it looks kind of small. Sometimes I'll use one, plus myself, and a camera bag, and perhaps a reflector as well in order to get enough shade to cover an area - or just wait for a cloud...

Sometimes I really like those specular reflections, Mike. I still remember a canvas print hanging in Tim's gallery that has a little section of "spotlighted" whitewater on Richland Creek taken in late afternoon light that is priceless (actually, there is a price, but for a poor ol' teacher like me - it's priceless). I've been working on shooting under that kind of light lately, but it ain't easy to do well.

I might also elaborate on Tim's suggestion about clouds. Some of the best light I find for macro work is just before the sun goes completely behind a cloud, or just comes out. I really think I prefer that to my diffuser or artificial shade. Waiting for a cloud also gives you an excuse to just sit around and enjoy the view or look around for other things to shoot.

I've got an umbrella on order. Will it let me take pictures like yours? I was afraid of that. While the sun blew out the white spot, I thought it made the upper part interesting.

Tim, you are one of my heroes. You are an inspiration. I'm not usually a gusher, but, hey.......

Bill, lack of patience is something I work on. I'm 61, so I been working on it a long time.

Hey Mike - I don't want to hear about 61 - I'm there with you and chasing the next number for all it's worth. As long as I wake up in the morning looking at the flowers from the top and not the bottom - I am one happy camper. I like the rendition of the water because it looks like the fast flows we got in the Sierra's when we went trout fishing out there. Kinda makes me homesick for the Eastern Sierra's. :toast:

Merle, that's funny. Gettin' old is hell but it sure beats the alternative.

I was on another forum the other day and we were talking about archiving. One guy was talking about saving his pix as jpeg because 20 years from now we won't be able to open CRW or CR2 files. I said in 20 years, if I haven't gone Tango Union, I;ll be begging some nurse to wipe the drool of my cheek or change my diaper, so I won't care what file format my pictures are in.

But for now, I'm still in the gas. I still think I'm 35. Except when I look in the mirror. Or try to do something.

Mike, despite the hot spot, this shot works for me. It's quite realistic, and I like the composition.
