I have some older files that were processed with Elements and now when I try to open them in PS CS2 they won't open and the error message is: Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document. What gives? they are saved as PSD files.

If you still have Elements, try resaving the files in TIF format, then re-opening them in CS2.
You'll still be able to keep your layers using TIF.

thanks, John. Actually, I don't have elements installed on my current computer. Shouldn't PS CS2 be capable of opening a psd file, regardless of whether it originated in elements or PS? thanks for any help.

It should. :frown:

Whenever you save a PSD file, a Format Options dialog window opens with a check box signifying 'Maximize Compatibility'.
Make sure that box stays checked whenever you store your PSD files in the future.

Here's a long shot...try resetting your Preferences in PS and see if that doesn't help.
As quickly as you can after starting Photoshop (don't wait for the the splash screen), press and hold the Ctrl Alt and Shift keys together at once.
A dialog window will appear asking to confirm that you want to delete the current settings.
Along with fixing any number of problems, this step will also reset your Preferences, so you may want to go to Edit->Preferences first and make a note of any that you've changed from the default values before you start.
