Dingy Skipper
40D, Sigma 180mm, 1/400 @ f8, ISO200, Tripod. Cropped a bit from top and RHS in PS7.

C&C welcome.

Yes, I've finally bought a digtal camera! Not overly impressed so far, bought it yesterday, had to take batteries out at one point because it froze up, and had to exchange it this morning because a bit broke/worked loose over the course of trying it out yesterday. Also, software doesn't seem to work (or rather, software works, but says camera is not compatible!) When I try to bypass software and download images direct from camera, get two Jpegs, rather than a jpeg and CR2??! Anyway this is one of my better shots from about an hour shooting outdoors with it yesterday at a nature reserve up the road.

Hi Greg

Nice to see a photo of this species and a nice photo too.

With regard to the software, make sure you have the latest versions installed from the website of the company concerned (Canon/Adobe etc). What software is it you are talking about by the way?

Are you absolutely sure you are shooting in RAW + JPEG mode rather than just JPEG? What are you using to 'see' the RAW files

Lots of questions Greg (sorry) but just trying to help

Hi Barrie,

The help is appreciated, so no need to apologise! Definately shooting in JPEG (Large, fine) AND RAW. I installed the software supplied (even the stuff that didn't seem to be relevant to the 40D) and after connecting and switching on camera nothing happened. Couldn't connect to camera through any of the software either (DPP, Camera Window). EOS Utility didn't seem to be on the CD - is this within another program? After the software wouldn't work I unsinstalled it all. Viewed and downloaded files on camera via Windows Explorer - two sets of identical JPEGS. Will download updates from website and try from there.

How odd.

I only have experience of Series 1 cameras and all the software was on the supplied disks and all the connectivity worked OK.

Sorry not to be able to help and hope you get it sorted.

You may know this already, but for links to all the latest software versions (for both camera firmware and computer software) I always use RobGalbraith's site at www.robgalbraith.com (the links are at the bottom right hand side of the home page)

Good luck

Excellent shot Greg.
I've been out looking for these for the last two weekends and have seen one go past flat out so far. All the foodplants are a bit slow round here.

Greg, the guy posting above says lots of good things about Canon cameras, as well as telling me you are heading 'home'! After two or three bodies, you'll probably get one that works!!

Dinghy Skipper, a nice subject to get going on and I'm sure you'll make it pop once you have the software sorted.
