I would be very interested to know what settings (C/fn) you use for flight shots ( Low contrast subjects )
As it stands my Mk111 with the new firmware installed will not lock on to any fast moving low contrast target like a Peregrine or a Razorbill , give the camera a big white bird like a Gannet and the focus nails it every time.
I've tried both the "ring of fire" and the centre point with assists , i've tried servo tracking sensitivity on all settings (Slow thru Fast) and this doesn't make any difference.
As this is my first 1 series body any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
This is the nub of the whole Mk3 AF problem. Photographing subjects with good contrast, the cameras perform OK. With poor contrast the AF performance is also poor.
The MK3 can and does give great image except in those instances that you have mentioned, I dont use the ROF and find centre point only helps but in low contrast situations it will either hunt or grab the background and not let go
As long as it's set for the AF not to go hunting (C Fn III 5) mine seems to be alright, but maybe I've not tried low enough light or contrast as yet. What sorts of shutter speeds are you talking about for the Bempton shots?
Apologies if you've seen it, but the following link was useful:

I was chatting to Dave Kjaer a couple of days ago, and the subject of the 1d MkIII came up and Dave says he is very happy with his.
Perhaps get in contact with him, he must be doing something right!

Hi Dave , mine does the same , if I try and track an incoming bird the AF locks onto the background and doesn't let go.
Cheers

Thanks for that Dave , i'll give that setting a go and see how things pan out.
Shutter speeds of anywhere between 1/640th and 1/3200th wide open.
