Generally speaking, i don't think a head is necessary, although ive been using a tilt-top head for the last few months {manfrotto 234}, and have it permanently locked at a slight angle.
Depends upon what weight you are sticking on the monopod, you have more control of the balance for up down swing with the Manfrotto swivel head with big heavy lenses as the monopod always stays verticle and the centre of gravity remains over the upright monopod - pulling or pushing the monopod to get the same angle and you risk the foot kicking out as the centre of gravity moves from verticle - when pushing forward to shoot down/below teh horizon you can jam your foot against the pod to prevent it kicking out backwards, but when pulling back to shoot upwards/overhead the foot can kick out forwards. Not such a problem with lighter lenses.

5 repliesInterested to see what heads anybody here uses on their monopod. Seems to be lots of contradictory advice as to what is best (if any).
About to do some travelling where I am only taking a monopod so any comments much appreciated.
Best wishes
Paul
