Decent result Chris, in difficult/harsh light,

Assuming this is a crop, i feel it needs a bit of space replaced on the LHS, as it is a bit unbalanced to my eye.

There does appear to be a natural reflection in the eye, and maybe that could be enhanced slightly, to add a more noticable glint in the eye.

Nice one!

Hi Chris,

Very nice capture considering the harsh lighing conditions!

Paul & Alan

Thank you, interesting comments about the light. It was taken around mid-day with the sun out, but I managed to get it behind me and with the bird being dark, I open the exp up a third.

Of course, now I've "messed" (sorry, carried out adjustments) with it in Lightroom (it was in RAW) its different again, but I guess you are saying the exposure not quite right.

I couple of pointers as to what I should be aiming for the image to look like would be really welcome.

Thank you again guys

Regards Chris

PS I also confess to giving the eye and bill a fair bit of sharpening!

Chris, i think your exposure is perfect.............great shadow detail, and no burnt-out highlights on any bright areas of frame {the rocky area, in this instance}.

I think the angle of light is the critical element {and not ideal in this instance}, and often we will have to do our best with what we are given to work with, which i feel you have done.

With this particular shot, i feel that you have achieved an ideal base/raw image, regarding recording as much detail that the camera can give you under those conditions, and the final perfecting of the image is now purely down to your PS skills/tastes etc {which is a continual learning curve for me, and i'm far from expert}.

I feel that a small selective contrast tweak on the bird would give it a slightly crisper look, although a touch more usm would probably achieve the same result. Bear in mind this is only my personal taste, and what i would do if it were mine

I agree that the exposure looks pretty good and I guess it is not an easy subject to get right, especially on that white rock. Biggest nit for me is the comp and I would probably look to swap the amount of spaces to right and left around so that it is looking into the shot. I think that would improve the whole appearance.
Nice capture.

I wish I could see more detail in the eye area.

Same for me - exposure looks good, which is great given the white rock and dark plumage in midday sun! Would prefer it looking into space though
