Having informed Nikon of a problem with AF useing TC's 1.4, 1.7, 2x with the 600mm f4 ifed etc. this is the astonishing reply I got.
Mind they all work with the D2x and the lens!!!

"The AF-S 600mm f/4D IF-ED II lens will not autofocus when used with the TC-14B, TC-17EII or the TC-20EII teleconverters. Autofocusing is possible when used with TC-14EII teleconverter."

in the next sentence it is , send your camera back for checking????

inersting.

Has any one else expeerienced this problem with the D300 at all?

Cant give you a difinitive answer as I use canon, but only the canon pro bodies retain AF when your maximum aperture is above f5.6,eg 500 f4 with 1.4 tc max ap wil be f5.6 so works fine on non pro bodies. 500 f4 with 2x tc = f8.will only AF on pro bodies.

hope this makes some sense.

Hi Paul,

I have been using the AF-S 600mm f/4D IF-ED II without any auto-focusing problems with the TC-14 E II, TC-17 E II and in very good light the TC-20 E II (it can auto-focus a f/8 without tapping the pins in superb lighting conditions). I often use the 1.4 which is flawless and the 1.7x which is superb in all but very low light. I use it with both the D2Xs and D300.
