I was talking to a gallery manager this Saturday and he asked me to submit a portfolio. There preferred format is PowerPoint submitted on a CD. This is the first time that I will be submitting a portfolio, so I am looking for help. To be sure, I am not asking for a lengthly discourse and the time that would take to prepare. A web site, a magazine article, preferably available on the web, or a good book on the subject would fill the bill.
Unfortunately, Fred, I've never heard of a book or article on something like this. PowerPoint does have the ability to pull in a bunch of image files at once, with some limited options. (It's under Insert->Picture->Photo Album.) Other than that I'd suggest searching on here for PowerPoint (I know there was at least a few threads on PowerPoint, like this one.) Google searching something like "PowerPoint Photo Album" or "PowerPoint Photo Portfolio" can help too.
I'm working on a presentation myself at the moment. I tried it powerpoint and it is possible but for a photo presentation I find Apple's Keynote far superior if you use a Mac. I'm even getting better results working in Keynote then converting it into a powerpoint file.
PowerPoint is a very poor tool for photo slideshows. As far as I know it doesn't allow you to preserve the image's physical size, and will scale to match a given screen/window, often resulting in pixelation and other artifacts.
Did they specifically ask for PowerPoint or did they use "PowerPoint" as a generic term for a slide show? You can produce much nicer presentations using software like ProShow Gold, Pics2Exe (for PC) or FotoMagico and Keynote (for Mac).
Thanks for the responses. I know the foibles of PowerPoint. I have a PC, so using Keynote is not an option. Guy, they did explicitly call out PowerPoiint. Actually, what they have in their "Artist Submission Guidelines" is: "...and it is best to save them in a Power Point Show." I haven't used PowerPoint in a few years, so I will check out the formatting issue. I have also heard good things about ProShow Gold. I have used CompuPic's bottom line photo program for years as a means of quickly viewing my photographs and have considered buying the PhotoShow Gold. I will check out Pics2Exe.
I guess that the presentation mode isn't really as important as the content. I will search around for some good guidelines on putting together a portfolio.
