A visit to the park
I was walking through the park the other day and say this strange looking duck. Goos thing I was quick with my D80! It flew off as I only had a few seconds to try to get a photo. I have no idea what it is. Ideas are welcome

Looks like a Pied Billed Grebe. They will also dive when you get close.

Interesting the way the feathers almost look like fur. What park was this?

The Metro Parks off of Rt 91 in Willoughby.

Because we thrive on precision on this forum - the Pied Billed Grebe is technically not a duck. Just for trivia sake, Ducks Unlimited classifies it as a "duck like bird." They are very wary and usually dive and disappear. I've also watched them raise their wings from below the surface and disappear straight down - a neat trick.

Ken's right..the Grebe is normally described as a duck-like diver. This one could easily camouflage himself in the dead wood that is in front of him, from the looks of it. Nice one, Brian.
