I haven't been able to do much hiking in the park, but I did get out to get some sunrise shots in the park, I didn't have much time so I went to the popular areas. The sun rise was kinda dull as there were clouds to the east but nothing over the mountains, I shot my own 4X5 for the first time. A 1920's Graflex that I bought from a guy for $100, it works and does everything that a large format does and that's all that matters to me.
I was only able to get a couple digital photos from the the Big Thompson River in Moraine Park, my camera battery died on me and when I went to change batteries the other one I had was dead, I had a third but I some how for some strange reason (blame it on aliens taking my brain ) I left the only good one at home. Thank God for 35mm, that saved the day for me as I only took 4 sheets of 4X5 (hey I am not wealthy yet to take tons of 4X5 photos )
Gosh Paul, I think you may the first photographer to ever leave a fresh battery at home......
For this image, I'd recommend making your foreground stronger by composing without the twigs in the lower left and using the rocks in the BT river to lead into the scene. This is the kind of shot that requires a very strong FG. You may also want to use a split ND (or do a 2 image blend) to add a stop of light to the FG and gain a bit more balance.
Last time that happened to me, i had to drive all the way down to Boulder to buy another battery.
This is a nice shot; i pretty much agree with Dave's comments. I think when you're stuck with less-than-optimal conditions, you have to improvise and maybe experiment a bit. Maybe some shots emphasizing the river more so than the bg peaks.
I like the shot.. would like a few clouds but that's up to nature and sometimes she won't cooperate! I usually have an inverter and camera battery charger in my car for situations like that, having been through the same thing you went through. Hope that helps.
