B+W Motorway Bird
does this work, to illustrate a concept (kestrels hover over motorways)

350D + 1.4 extender + 300mmF4L
1/500 @ f5.6
ISO 200
full frame

Great thinking Jack...............could be the beginnings of a great project!!

Very effective in my view!!

Possibly the bird being head-on would have been a bonus, although being in flight is more eye-grabbing than perched on a lamp post {although i guess that could be an essential part of a project}.

I think this motorway concept shot is a fine beginning:toast: :toast:

Yep, this works for me. Well captured and the B&W works well here.

Works very well indeed, though I agree that it may be better face on.

Hi Jack,

Very nice indeed, great vision and I look forward to the others in your series. Birds position does not bother me, it shows the species well in a man made environment.

Great work

Hi Jack,

This is a great Man & Nature Series/project! It works for me! A head on flight shot would work better IMO!

hi jack,

it's a good idea. this doesn't work too well for me, it could be a lot stronger. if at all possible a higher viewpoint and a closer zoom on the bird would give more of an emphasis on the bird, but still equal amount on the cars. probably very difficult to get though, without a helicopter :)

I think this is a great idea for a project and this is an excellent start, but I am betting that you look at this and think about all the things that might work better. Bird facing the camera, better view of a road sign, cars more or less blurred - so many possibilities. I'd say that it is pretty good, but you will already have had better ideas for the next shot? B&W works fine for me, artistically. Not a very photographer-friendly environment that you are working in either, which makes the shot an even greater achievement.

Although I tend to agree with some of the comments, this is not the type of shot that you can readily go out and set up. Sometimes you have to make the most of whats offered and I think you have. It does give rise to thoughts about other environment type shots though.

Hi Jack

Works for me and with the bird small in the frame it is good that the rest of the frame is OOF. I dont mind the bird facing away although I would have placed it just a little further to the left of frame. I like it!

Certainly a concept worth working on.
For me, a crop just under the wheels of the second car from the top would have made a stronger image.
I've done a few road-kills with the traffic in the background, but birds are a different proposition.
Now how about the Crows in B/W??

Well caught.

Well done, I think its great. Nice &W shot, good tones, not overblown contrast.

Like the shot and think there is certainly some scope for taking the project in that direction. Head on may look better bu t what makes the kestrel really jump out is the lightness over its back and wings, I think you'd lose that from the other view as they fall away to the rear, unless of course you were higher up... but that would be a mean feat!

Hi Jack

I've only just come across this but I have to say, I love your vision and the story-telling qualities of this image - something too often overlooked in my view. Brilliant!
