Does anyone know if the Epson 3800 or 4880 can use sheet paper longer than 22 inches. I know the max width is 17 but Epson states that it can only handle sheets that are 22 inches long.

Carl - This is from a printer review on Ink Jet Art :

"MEDIA HANDLING UPDATE: we asked one of our friends in the upper levels of Epson's support departments just how long the 3800 can print - they replied that they understand it will handle up to 37 inch lengths using the normal driver. For all those out there wanting a 16x24 print this is very good news. Epson says that you must load these longer sheets from the top main loader. The Secondary single sheet loader will handle fine art (or any media) up to 325 g/m2, and accommodates media up to 17 inches wide; and the front-loading, straight-through, manual sheet feeder handles media up to 16 inches wide (and up to 1.5 mm thick posterboard)."

"We also learned on a forum that the minimum paper size is 3 1/2" x 5" and the maximum size is 17" x 37 3/8" - apparently this comes from the Japanese user manual."

I don't know why the manual would say differently, unless longer lengths have potential problems that they may want to avoid. I guess maybe you'll just have to try something longer and see.

You can use sheet size up to 17"x37" with the standard driver. So far the largest I've used is 17x30. If you want to use longer than 37" then you'd need to get a rip. check out this link as it is an excellent source on the 3800. 3800 ref

It's a great printer, but if you need to do volume printing the lack of roll feed capability will be a bottleneck.

Thanks guys, that's what I thought. I think the reason they state 17x22 as the max sheet size is because that is the largest sheet size that Epson makes!

I use the 17x25 Inkjetart Micro Ceramic Luster and it works great!! It is nice to get a full 16x24 from it. I asked the Epson rep when they were going to make a 17x25 Exhibition Fiber paper and he laughed at me and told me 'no one makes a 17x25 paper. Oh well. Nothing like listening to the customer.

enjoy! john
