I have a question to those of you who have a Sigma 500mm, Sigma says that there is no AF with the TC 1.4 if this is true ????? as I have heard that with the D300 it works??
Can anyone enlighten me I have some answers to give @ I am not 100% sure what they should be.
Thank you for your cooperation:biggrin:

Most camera AF systems get dicey about f5.6, but most will work in brighter light at somewhat slower aperature than that. You could try it. It might not be reliable at twilight but otherwise do just OK. Sigma is just heading off complaints by saying it won't work at all, rather than say it will work some of the time, depending on light conditions and camera used.

hey Avi

I don't have a D300, but the D2x works. I use the Nikon TC 14IIe. I had to file the stupid little metallic tab off, for it to fit on to the lens, but AF works pretty well with it. The EXIF file does not record the correct aperture, so if you meter with a external meter, you need to be aware of that. Otherwise I've no complaints with the system.

Cheers

If you use the Sigma 1.4 it will disable the autofocus but will retain the correct exif data. You can tape one of the pins but I find it hunts too much.

I use a Nikon TC14E with the little tab was filed off it locks focus pretty fast and dont not hunt at all.
It works very well and still gives excellent image quality but will not report the correct exif data.

Autofocus also works pretty well with the Kenko Pro 1.4x converter, providing you tape three of the pins on the TC.

Hi Avi,

A word of warning! If you do tape the pins the lens hunts more, which in turn causes a lot more wear and tear on the USM/HSM motor. I have three lovely door stops here because of that problem on older lenses where spares are no longer available!
