Black flies and ugly shedding coats, I've decided anyways to spend a few days in early June on the Magalloway and Androscoggin River near Errol as well as Grafton Notch Park, Maine. Any tips are welcome-besides moose calves, would love to target a black-backed woodpecker in area.

Hi Jeff!! You'll be in my neck of the woods and I'd love to meet you. I'm finally back to work after my illness so now I don't have the time to devote to being out there as much but even if we meet for coffee... Email me if you feel like it and we'll set it up.

At least the bull moose will have nicely developed antlers by then. I saw one the other day that had his palmating (Is that a word???) already. And the calves will have been born then with their red coats. I wish you luck with the black flies. Bring your deet or netting!!

Two years ago I got some shots of a Blackbacked Woodpecker nest with both parents feeding (separately) their loud young one. It NEVER stopped chattering!! I looked in the book and it said that my location is on the VERY northern fringes of their habitat. I went back to the nest site last year and there was nothing.

Anyway, Jeff, I hope you have fun and I hope to meet you. Chris

For boreal birds, the folks at the mount washington auto road usually have information on the bicknell's thrush, and I believe can set up an evening tour up the road targetting them. It's worth it for that difficult species.

I was browsing this site yesterday for bird sitings, and they mentioned a black back at pondicherry NWR. If you haven't been there, it's an amazing place...I almost always see moose there, and the view is to die for. Plus...tons of birds...

Here's scott young's black back shot mentioned from there yesterday...

As for other moosing spots, it's hard to go wrong in that area...I've camped both on the megalloway and on the andro in the 13 mile woods, and have been woken up by them in my campsite both times...

Good luck!
