I got to play around with a Canon 500 f/4 L IS yesterday evening, thanks to a kind guest at the observatory (John)! Wow its a heavy thing, but was great to use on my tripod. Here's one of the arctic skua shots I took. It looks like the one on the right is shouting into its bemused partner's ear!
Canon EOS 30D
Canon 500 f/4 L IS (not mine - I want one!)
Canon 1.4 Teleconverter
Manfrotto tripod with ball and socket head
ISO 200
1/800 at f/6.3
White balance in LR, slight crop, levels and USM in PS Elements
I like the pose on the right hand bird a lot. It's dangerous to have a play with such a nice lens, you'll have convinced yourself that it's an absolutely essential buy in no time!
Superb capture! Love the interaction! Yup, the 500mm is heavy but a beautiful lens! Watch your bank account empty when you buy one! and you will now you've tried it!
If you do end up getting one of those lens's, don't worry..............although the long-toms are heavy, it all equals out in the end, as your wallet suddenly becomes much lighter!!
