Hi
Could someone please check if they are able to use the AF
with this combination on a 1 series camera?
The max aperture value is 6.7 so it should work right?
I ask because mine refuses to AF and i still have 2 months of warranty
left on the lens. (the extender is fine, i tested this with another lens)
p.s. AF works fine with the 1.4x extender and works fine with no extender at all.

Thank you.

Hello Wim,

I'm not sure but a think AF only workd below F5.6 (it depends on the camera you're using. With the 1D(s) it works till F8). There is a solutions for this. Just tape the first three notches on your 2X (the ones connected to your camera) and you'll have AF available again because your camera does not know now you're using a 2X.
You cal also buy a non-Canon converter, they do not have these notches as far as I know.

The last one is in Dutch, but I'll think you can read it.

Good luck.

Tom, yes i'm aware of that,
but it's a 1DmIII and it should retain it's AF capabilities till F8.

Hello Wim,

Sorry that was not clear to me. I do not own a 1D(s) so I can only say what I did hear, and that is that is should work. May be you can ask at the shop where you bought your equipment. Sorry I can not help you any further.

On my EOS 3 (yeah, a film body), the combination works reasonably well. I haven't tried it on the pro digital bodies, but with the same advertised maximum aperature, it should still work.

I would suggest cleaning all of the contacts, from the lens to the body. These can be a bit touchy at times, working with some combinations and not with others. Rumor has it a pencil eraser should work, but I've never tried to clean the contacts.

Hmm, for what it's worth, I just tried with my Sigma 180mm macro, Sigma 2x, and 1Ds Mark III. No AF at the max aperture of 7.1. I've also read that it should work up to f/8, so that seems odd. Maybe for some reason it only works with the large telephotos, like the 500 & 600? Don't know why that would be though...

If memory serves right, then the 180/3.5 + 1.4x only AF's to a certain minimum distance, and then can be manually focused closer. This was intentional to increase focus accuracy...ie you do it!

I don't think the 2x + 180 autofocuses - by design.

HTH.

Thanks guys, you put me on the right trail for searching this problem.
turns out to be that the 180 and the 1.4x will AF but not below 80cm,
and with the 2x it won't AF at all.
It apparently has something to do with the aperture that works slightly different in macro lenses and close focus distances.
So this is a feature  and not a defect.

Wim.
