this is my first time posting a photo on here. this is quite the community of 'local' photographers. i have been visiting here for weeks, and now i think it's time for me to get involved.

anyways this is false kiva. it took me 3 days to get the photo that i wanted. weather was not on my side. if you say that i could have used a ND filter, i did use one. i used a 2 stop soft filter, and a polarizer.

cheers

Welcome, Josh.
False Kiva is such a magical place - so I don't mind having to revisit it to get the right light.

What time of day did you shoot this?
I like it in the evening with low angle light on the distant buttes.
Hiking out in the dark is fun.

this was taken around 2pm. on this day i stayed there until long after dark. you are right the distant buttes had stunning light. but the positioning of the kiva in the alcove makes it so dark. even with a 3 stop nd filter there was no way i was going to capture a fully dynamic image. HDR would have been the way to go. but i have something against it.

i did however get some nice images near sunset with an external flash. but i posted this one, because it best resembled the classic kiva shot.

Welcome Josh!
Nice shot of this icon. I have yet to get there, I enjoy seeing it.
It sounds like the DR was pretty wide. I understand your reluctance to use HDR programs. Have you tried layered blends in photoshop? Darkening the midground and boosting the contrast in the clouds could really make this more dramatic. But that's my taste.
This is a nice rendering in any case.

Thanks for sharing!

Welcome Josh.

This is a pretty good shot from this site. It does seem like the weather wasn't particularly cooperative.
