I drove over Guanella Pass Sunday afternoon and took advantage of the overcast to take some pictures of Geneva Creek. This photo is a blend of two different exposures; one at 8 seconds, and the other at 1/500 of a second. What do you think of the affect?
Dave,
This is an interesting effect, with some water blurred and some stopped fast -- I like it. Its definitely a different look than I am used to seeing.
The image itself seems a bit dark or underexposed, except it appears the highlights are about to be clipped. It might be a good candidate for B&W output though.
I looked at this for a while before I read your description. My first reaction was...cool textures! Then I noticed the stopped water and silky water and suspected foul play! I think this works well as an artsy effect to an everyday scene. I'd lighten up the rocks though as they are a bit dark for my tastes.
Interesting idea. I'd like to see this on a more dramatic waterfall. I think I also might like it with the opacity lowered on the 1/500 second shot to give more prominence to the long exposure. But I like the creativity!
I personally like this, the darkness adds a nice sense of atmosphere and makes the image seem, well, more 'wet' if that makes any sense at all. I almost feel as though I am standing there.
So is Guanella now passable? Last time I was there, 3 weeks ago, it wasn't.
Guanella pass was open with 2 wheel drive cars going over it without a problem last Sunday. I thought the idea was interesting but wasn't initially sure whether or not I liked the effect. Thanks for looking and taking the time to give feed back.
Just a few weeks ago I was thinking this might make a cool effect. Thanks for proving me right by actually going out and trying it! Cool. For the next one, I'd look for a sunny waterfall, with greater contrast.
