Skitish birds present a greater challenge to me as the number of shots depicting the absent subject illustrates.

This species is no exception it doesn't stay still for a second.

I wanted to show its great colour against a dark background without losing feather detail Im not sure I went about it in the correct manner.

I tend to rely on autofocus rather than manual as the time to set up in M results in losing the subject 80% of the time.

1D3 sigma 50mm-500mm hand held 417mm ISO500 f/6.3 1 /30th sec.

Shot in RAW to lightroom and resized in PS3.

Comments & Critique most welcome.

Thanks

Barry

Agree with Dave it's a little dark, I'm impressed that you managed to get this hand held with such a low shutter speed.

Hi Barry,

I cannot recommend a tripod highly enough in this scenario. It would certainly mean a higher percentage of sharp shots at this shutter speed.

What a fantastic bird!!! I may have used a higher ISO to reduce shutter speed, but I think your framing is spot on. Don't apologise about using autofocus - I use it 90% of the time (mind you, I rely on old technology and don't use a 1Dmk111!!!!!)

Hi Barry,

I’d love a crack at these beautiful birds! Lovely capture and it looks sharp for a handheld capture! I tadge dark on my monitor, but easily rectified in Photoshop! Lovely composition!

Jack,

That's fine by me. I'm lacking in PS for some reason as I mentioned previously downloading from a RAW image from Lightroom to PS3 degrades the shot it may well be my settings my hunch is its something fairly basic. I just have no idea what.

Jacks re-working has definately made a huge difference Barry {i'm now thinking of sending him all my future shots  }.

Now i can really appreciate the shot to its fullest!!

Great looking bird, and nicely taken :toast: :toast:

I know what you mean about getting to grips with various software, and agree it is usually just a small thing that makes all the difference..............the problem is finding that small thing.

No dought all will become clear very soon!
