This is a female Yocotoco Antpitta. First discovered by American birder Bob Ridgley only 10 years ago in a remote valley in Ecuador. To protect the birds habitat a remarkable conservation effort known as the Yocotoco Foundation was started and it now owns 8 reserves totalling over 13,00 hectares. www.fjocotoco.org
Photographing this species was the focus of my last trip to South America and the effort well worth it! Antpittas are notoriously hard to even see, let alone photograph but the foundation has habituated a pair at Tapichalaca and this is one of them.
Techs 1D2N, 5004, ISO 640, F5, 1/80th sec.
All best,
Dave
