I'd like to thank everyone who offered suggestions and hints for my recent trip to Capitol Reef. The weather was both a blessing and a hindrance, and I was forced to make several major changes to my shooting schedule based on unseen events (no barn picture - the field was all dug up; no Bentonite Hills due to campsite search woes, and the list goes on...).
But I did manage to cover a LOT of ground, so I thought I'd share.
And then I ran away a day early on Saturday because the park was holding its 200th anniversary for the historic Gifford House... So I stopped off at the very, very excellent Sego Canyon panels.
Dramatic light on the 1st shot, love the 3rd shot with its contrasts of living green plants against red sandstone. Someday I will have to stop at Sego Canyon, that panel is amazing, and I like your composition of the figures.
Great stuff. That third one really evokes a "I'm there" feeling, like I can feel the air and hear little sounds bouncing off the rock walls. The Sego Canyon panels are rich, too.
Todd - the little sounds you hear bouncing off the rock walls are tentworms, I think... it was literally raining tentworms in that canyon.
Bill, the Sego Canyon panels are great because they're car-accessible (unfortunately, this means there's also a significant amount of vandalism - modern and "classic"). There are about 5 panels in a mix of Ancestral Ute, Fremont, and Barrier styles. Don't overlook the set of panels across the road from the main set. BTW, the image I have above is perhaps 1/4 of the main Barrier panel; the guy with the snakes is also from that panel.
I really dig the Notom-Bullfrog Road and Burr Trail series (great color contrast of orange and green), as well as the Sego Canyon panels (beautiful pastels).
Les, Really nice series. I really like the first one. Wonderful light and cloud action. I really like the way you balanced the rock formation with the tree and included the the small bush in the lower left to anchor it all.
I also really like the Great colors of green foliage and orange rocks in the 3rd one.
Excellent work Les, but stop showing everybody how sweet this park is.
Scenic Road is excellent as are several from your Burr Trail section. Thanks for sharing. I might be heading back to CR this fall, so I might be following up with an email or two.
Yeah, Mel - I gotta stop advertising the park; it's getting crowded enough as it is. I'll be back there at the tail end of September - it will be my fourth trip to CR for the year. If I keep this up, I'll be able to put together a book...
Thanks everyone for the comments and for looking. I was going to post a few more of these over to ESS but got impatient to put them up online somewhere; might still x-post one or two.

First, some shots from along the main roads: Capitol Reef Scenic area.
I never knew there was such a variety!
Great light on that first shot.
