Winter Surprise

We've had some fantastic weather over the last several days. We went from 100 degree weather in the OV one day to upper 60s the next, with snow in the high country. I headed up to north lake on Monday morning, memorial day, and found the lake had frozen over during the night with several inches of snow on the ground. It hadn't been frozen the friday prior, so it must've gotten cold!

I have been thinking of this comp for awhile but with early morning light. Unfortunately it was too cloudy during day break. So I shot this not too long after the clouds started to break. Which didn't last long.

I'd like some feedback regarding the b&w conversion of this, i.e. how do the tones look, etc.
I blended two shots together to create this composite.

TIA!!

This very nice, Cory. The B&W conversion looks very crisp to me. Although admittedly, I'm no B&W shooter or converter. But, I know what I like when I see it, and this is extremely nice IMO.

Hi Cory,

Those must have been some pretty cold conditions. Didn't think that area would see such low temps at this time of the year.

I really like the composition here. Lots of interesting elements that have been tastefully arranged. Regarding the B&W conversion - I love the whites a lot but feel that some of the darks can be pushed further. Given that the lower right corner is dark, my suggestion would be to (try and) darken the sky some more. I also recommend adding some additional contrast to the mid-tones.

Hi Cory,
The conversion is wide tonal range is amazing...the composition keeps my eyes bouncing all over the place - lots of repeating shapes - well done.

Yea Anil.....
Even here near Sacramento it was snowing on Hwy 80 down to 5,000 feet....
Anil, thanks for verbalizing what I was hunting for ....
you nailed it... yeah it needs some more contrast in the mid-tones...
aka yeah what Anil said....
Nice job Cory tho.... ;-)
Glad you were able to get up there and enjoy the late snow...
We sure need it..

in gratitude,
Nelcha

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I thought it needed something, but couldn't put my finger on it. I think I'll redo from scratch.

Nelcha: wow, I80 had snow down to 5k huh? Impressive.

FYI: they say we should be getting more of these storms next week too.

Cory,

Beautiful scene, nice comp and the b&w looks great to me. Personally, I like the sky as is, although rather than darkening the blue, I would brighten the clouds. That, in effect, would increase the contrast in the sky as well. But I wouldn't brighten any of the snow as it looks just right. Overall, I like this very much as is.

Just think, only 5 more months until you'll have a reason to shoot this scene in color! :-)

Thanks Richard & Lon!

@Lon: "...only 5 more months until you'll have a reason to shoot this scene in color!" It's funny you should say that as I was thinking I can't wait 'til fall as I was walking out of there. It's going to be a good fall color display this year.
