Car camping on the Outer Banks?

Guys and Gals,
Any suggestions for car camping on the OB in NC? I want to head out to the Hatteras/Buxton area for a couple of days. I remember seeing a couple of spots right off of Hwy 12 that you could park in, but am not sure of the overnight rules.
Any experience out here? Thanks in advance!

I usually just drive out on the beach and sleep there.
