Man Orchid
Managed an hour at a local reserve over the weekend looking for Dragons and although that was not too successful, the local Man orchids were out in force.

Pentax K20D,
Pentax 200mm f/2.8 SDM
f/2.8

Hi Ian,

Sounds like you had some good success even if you didn't find the Dragons.. A nice capture and the BG works well but I feel that the DOF has failed you a little as the top and bottom of the flower seem a little OOF. I look forward to getting down there and trying myself, I know I've had the same problem with the Green winged O's that I took recently..

Brett.

Good background and a not too central composition are pluses here.
f2.8 is good for getting a background muted but coupled with 200mm it doesn't give you much of a depth of focus.
Take this out to f6.3 or f8 and the background will still be muted but your subject will look a lot sharper all over.
Cheers
John

Thanks guys. The lens was on test, hence the f/2.8, which was deliberate. I also have some where the whole plant is sharp, but the BG not so muted.

Hi Ian,

Lovely image! I quite like the shallow depth of field!
