I just got back from a little family vacation to the PNW. We drove the entire coast and had a really great time. The weather was very good for photography as well. Here are a few of the initial shots I have processed. I am many more to work on including the Redwoods and Columbia River Gorge.
Thanks for whetting my appetite for my trip out there. Could you provide precise GPS coordinates of where you were standing for these shots? That way I can just be lazy and duplicate your shots.
Bautiful ...Derek....I really like the second one also!! That is very powerful..... I also like the last one..... looks like you had a great trip....eager to see more posts..... regards, Rajeev
If you can believe it the most frustrating part is processing all the images - I took about 3500. Of course I shoot digital so I took a lot of sequences especially during golden hours. Anyway I would be more than happy to share any info I can with you.
Shot #1 was taken near Humbug Mtn. State Park (south of Bandon). This is one of my personal favorites because of the raw beauty and power I experienced there with the profuse lupines growing up and down the cliffs right in front of these large waves and rocks.
#2 was Bandon Beach at sunset. There are 'Many' interesting rock structures there which the waves rush toward and thru.
#3-5 Samuel Boardman SP - Arch Rock viewpoint. This SP was #1 for coastal scenic beauty. I asked many respected members on the PNW forum and most agreed that this southern portion of the coast is the most photogenic. It has the best sea stacks and rock with tunnels going thru them, etc... Here is a map of the park. Just hit all the main lookouts and you will NOT be disapointed! http://www.oregonstateparks.org/images/pdf/boardman.pdf
Probaly my second favorite location is near Florence. Haceta Head Lightouse can be shot from 'sooo' many angles. I haven't even got to my favorite sunset shoot there yet. And Cape Perpetua Lookout is amazing. Huge fields of wildflowers were blooming up there with the rugged coast in the background. I'll post more shots as I process them.
These are all great shots (#2 is really great). Thanks for the information too. We are hoping to start at the Redwoods and work our way up later this summer.
As with most of the posts, I have to say I really love the second shot. Great sunset colors and wonderful scenery! I really have to take a return trip or three out there; I was going that way this year and got stopped at every turn...

Here is a shot within the park of Natural Bridges which I don't even think does it full justice:

We stayed in the park at the Whaleshead Beach Resort. I highly recommend it.

Thirdly I would have to say Ecola SP next to Cannon Beach was very inspiring as well. And that is only ~ 1.5 hours from Portland. Here is one from there:
